Tape LTO upgrade
Bell Micro campaign to swap out existing LTO1, LTO2 and LTO3 tape drives for LTO4 technology. The proposed campaign will allow customers to shorten back-up windows and reduce the numbers of cartridges in their environment. Older LTO drives and media that have expired warranties can be replaced with LTO4 equivalents and a valid TCO case can be built to show significant savings.
Why upgrade to LTO4?
Is your business faced with any of the following data backup issues? If so, why not deploy IBM LTO4 tape drive technology and reap the benefits that LTO4 technology can deliver?
Backups are taking far too long and it’s becoming an issue that needs managing?
LTO 4 tape drive technology can help dramatically reduce backup windows by offering increased backup speed. LTO4 offers a 50% improvement in transfer speed over LTO3, 200% over LTO2 and 700% over LTO1.
Do you find you have too many cartridges (tapes) to manage effectively?
LTO technology has doubled the capacity of tape cartridges with each revision of the technology leading to an 800GB capacity available with LTO4 today. This means the numbers of tape cartridges that needs to be managed can be reduced by consolidating backups onto larger cartridges.
Are you running out of floor space in the datacentre?
Improved capacity and performance can lead to a reduction in the number of drives and cartridges required in a backup environment. This can lead to smaller footprint for newer tape backup devices.
Do you feel you have too many (backup) operators?
Improved capacity and performance can lead to a reduction in the number of drives and cartridges required in a backup environment. This can lead to fewer operators required to manage the backup environment.
Are you worried about data security on your tape cartridges?
Tape drive encryption is available across the IBM range of LTO4 products. Recent events including the HMRC’s well publicised data loss mean that businesses are focussed on securing customer and business data. Increasing government regulation requirements are driving the need to protect the information stored on off-site media such as tape cartridges. It has been estimated that the average “data breach” costs a business £47 per record lost. The HMRC child benefit data incident consisted of 25 million lost records. Costs incurred from a data breach include legal fees, call centre costs, lost employee productivity, regulatory fines, lost of investor confidence and customer losses.
